A tribute to Manna Dey

The voice that gave us soul-stirring and immortal melodies such as "Laaga chunri mei daag chupaoo kaise" and "Puchho na kaise maine rain bitayi", has fallen silent.

Manna Dey passed away at a Bangalore hospital on Thursday morning after gifting music rasikas over 3,500 songs mainly in Hindi and Bengali. He was 94.
While "Laaga chunri" and "Puchho na kaise" were arguably his biggest hits and unmatched numbers in the classic music mould, over the years what has tugged at my heartstrings the most has been his mesmerising number "Ae mere pyare watan, ae mere bichhdey chaman, Tujhpe dil qurban".
And then, displaying the sheer breadth of his versatility Manna Dey also gave us, again filmed on Balraj Sahni, the lilting melody "Ae meri Zohra Jabeen, tujhe maloom nahi', which can give a run for their money to lively numbers of the ilk of "Kajrare kajkrare tere kaaley kaaley naina".
Dey also sang fast moving evergreen melodies such as "Yeh raat bheegi bheegi", "Aaja sanam madhur chaandni mei hum", and "Pyar hua iqraar hua".
For this one-man institution, the Dada Saheb Phalke award in 2007 came too late.
The best tribute one can pay this legend is from the lines he had so beautifully sung in Ae meri Zohra Jabeen:Yeh shokhiya heh baankpan jo tujh mei hei kahi nahi; Dilo ko jeetney ka phan so thujh mei hei kahi nahin…
Your voice… your music… were indeed unique and nobody can win our hearts the way you did…

THOUGHT BEHIND THE PLOT - YEH MANZILEIN HAI KAUN SI ?

FILM MAKER QUOTES

Today we gathered together a collection of inspiring, thought provoking and humorous quotes from great filmmakers of the past and present. There is nothing I’m going to write this late at night that will compete, so on with the show…

1. Most people don’t know what they want or feel. And for everyone, myself included, It’s very
difficult to say what you mean when what you mean is painful. The most difficult thing in the
world is to reveal yourself, to express what you have to… As an artist, I feel that we must try many
things – but above all, we must dare to fail. You must have the courage to be bad – to be willing to
risk everything to really express it all. –John Cassavetes

2. My three Ps: passion, patience, perseverance. You have to do this if you’ve got to be a
    filmmaker.

    -Robert Wise

3. Pain is temporary, film is forever!

    - John Milius

4. What I always tell people is… Unless you are so passionate about filmmaking that you would
rather live out of your car than not do it, find something else to do as a career and do filmmaking
as a hobby. This industry is one of the hardest to break into and be successful. It takes a lot of
passion and dedication for it to get anywhere…

    - Ryan Connolly

5. The Only Safe Thing is to Take a Chance.

    - Mike Nichols

6. Why Pay a Dollar for a Bookmark? Why Not Use the Dollar for a Bookmark?

    - Steven Spielberg

MAKING A SHORT FILM

In this day and age, anyone can make a short film. But,  to make a good film it will take time, preparation, and some expense. If making a short film is something we really want to do, putting time in now will make all the difference later.

Tips
  • Before our shoot let's make sure we have all our equipment with us. It is best to plan these things before production.
  • Have fun with it!
  • If we are filming in a public place, let's always, always make sure we have signed releases from all random faces that may appear in our movie.
  • Let's Remember our overall vision as we record our footage. Let's not forget to record voice-overs (talking) and other sounds as part of our regular footage. We can always use the video or audio independently.
  • Let's make our production choices based on necessities. Let's not forget that we can use pictures and still shots for video, too.
  • To make a film, we will need to be creative.
  • YEH MANZILEIN HAI KAUN SI ? is what you want to accomplish.

Warnings
  • Let's always check our camera before shooting just in case we have forgotten to press record. This is to avoid losing precious footage!
  • There are laws against using videos of people and certain places without permission. Let's always ask the subject or the owner/operator of a building if it's okay to record them and be sure to tell them what it's for. For added protection, have them write it on paper when they give permission.
  • Let's be careful to check each setting on our recording device as we operate or we might miss the best shot. It's a good idea to review our footage after each take.

Let's Show the film to friends and family and/or post it to YouTube. If we are serious about film-making, let's submit it to film festivals and send it to film agencies. Remember, the more publicity we get, the better short films we will be able to make in the future. And remember, everyone had to start somewhere!

Good luck, and remember the most important rule of film-making... Have a good time!

Ideas for funding our short film - YEH MANZILEIN HAI KAUN SI ?

Ideas for funding our short film - YEH MANZILEIN HAI KAUN SI ?
The biggest obstacle most filmmakers face when they want to make a movie is the problem of money: with hefty price tags for equipment, cast, staff, and shooting privileges, production costs can quickly run into the tens and hundreds of thousands of rupees. It's especially difficult to raise money for short films, as they rarely offer much of a return on investment. However, if we are smart about keeping costs down—using Digital Video (DV) instead of film, for example, or employing amateur actors—it's possible to fund our pet project by following these steps.
1. Resourcefulness. Let's make the most of the resources we have locally by listing all the locations, props, actors, equipment and crew available locally and use this to develop a cost effective idea.

2. Let's Create a realistic estimate of how much our short film will cost.Let's  be liberal with our cost projections.
  • A serious pitfall for many short film producers is cost overrun after they have raised their initial goal. It's better to spend more time raising too much money than to find yourself in a situation where your film is half-done and you are out of funds.Incorporate your film company if you plan on raising more than Rs.200,000.
3. Incorporation will create separate bank accounts for our film and for our personal life. If our film goes bankrupt, funds from our personal accounts will not be liable for collection.
4. Let's Create a separate bank account for our film fund.
5. Lets draw up a business plan to present to potential film investors.
6. Let's create a website or social media outlet to give our film a public face and so that film investors can regularly view information about your project.
  • Our business plan  should include detailed information about production costs, anticipated shooting time, locations, and predicted revenue. Provide a detailed budget.
  • Let's be sure to include information about our selves and the other people working on the film. We should also indicate other sources from which we hope to raise money. Film investors will want to know that our team is responsible and that we will have enough money to cover all our costs.
7. Let's Apply for public and private grants that fund films.
  • Let's find out some well known institutions that provide film grants . Let us also seek out local arts groups and corporate foundations.
8. Let us approach local businesses and professionals who have contributed to independent films in the past.
  • Let us ask these businesses and professionals for a modest amount of money. Let us be  frank about our expected costs, and let us  not promise any return on investment.
9. Let's Investigate "crowd funding" projects , websites on which artists can post projects and raise small funds from thousands of interested supporters.

10. Let's Invite our investors to witness our film production and include them as much as possible in the process.

  • Although a single grant or generous gift may be enough to cover production costs, we will most likely have to raise money for our short film from several different sources. We will have to change our approach to potential investors based on their experience with the film world and how much money we hope to raise from them: for example, an experienced film investor might appreciate the chance to become personally involved in production, while a corporate foundation will put more emphasis on a professional business plan.

  • MUMBAI FILM ACADEMY IN UNISON WITH KALADARPAN

In 1982 , we brought forth upon Anushaktinagar a new notion, conceived in shrewd innocence and dedicated to the principle that " We are born to Perform" . The notion was KALADARPAN and the PLAYS of this whirlwind began to tickle Anushaktinagars funny bone and make people think on socio - political issues. We never dreamt that behind the façade of giggling teenage pranks and college gags , rags ,... there lay so many dramatists , script writers and budding artists! It is our fond hope that KALADARPAN should become the forum of communication for the talented people. It must mirror their achievements, voice their problems and echo their aspirations. KALADARPAN IS NOT JUST A THEATRE GROUP. It's a forum to match every temperament. All round fun , jibe... for the star you are and the star you want to be. BORN FREE , BORN FAMOUS . BLESSED WITH TALENT. Go ahead and flaunt yourself . It's time others took notice of you . In the end , we all are here to play our roles and we are born actors .
MUMBAI FILM ACADEMY and KALADARPAN have come together to create a hindi short film named YEH MANZILEIN HAI KAUN SI ? for the International Film Festival  .
